Steel Fatigue Strength in Crane Runway Beams According to EN 1993-1-9

Steel fatigue strength in crane runway beams and supporting structures directly determines the safety of industrial hall constructions. Therefore, overhead cranes continuously transfer variable loads, inducing cyclic stresses. As a consequence, high-cycle fatigue occurs within the material structure. Furthermore, this process can initiate microcracks at stress levels significantly lower than the static yield strength fy.

How Do Dynamic Loads Affect Steel Fatigue Strength?

First of all, crane operation induces repetitive cycles of tensile and compressive stresses. Therefore, the PN-EN 1993-1-9 standard requires determining the nominal stress range Δσ and the equivalent stress range ΔσE,2 referenced to a baseline of 2 × 106 cycles.

Fatigue damage in crane tracks most commonly results from three main factors:

  • Stress concentrations in notches: These occur at fillet welds and bolt holes.
  • Residual stresses: These additionally develop during the welding of bracings and stiffeners.
  • Lateral-torsional buckling and twisting: Eccentric wheel loads from the crane on the top flange simultaneously induce transverse bending of the web.

As a result, designers must meticulously select fracture-resistant materials. Moreover, we discussed practical principles for selecting material grades in our article on steel resistance to brittle fracture in J2 and K2 sub-classes.

WOST S.A. Structural Sections and Steel Fatigue Strength in Crane Runway Systems

Hot-rolled structural sections from the WOST S.A. product range play a key role in crane runway systems, ensuring the rigidity of the entire structure. In turn, selecting the right profiles significantly reduces the risk of damage:

  • Hot-rolled UPN channels – reinforce the top flange against lateral-torsional buckling and twisting, and serve as longitudinal girders for service walkways.
  • Hot-rolled Tees – form chords in lattice trusses and bracings due to their high in-plane rigidity.
  • Equal and unequal angle bars – form lacing, vertical bracings, and mounting elements for wall girts.

The high fatigue strength of steel offered by WOST S.A. stems directly from its uniform microstructure. At the same time, hot-rolled products do not exhibit severe edge stresses at the corners. As a result, they differ from cold-formed profiles and significantly reduce the risk of crack initiation.

Steel Fatigue Strength and Detail Categories (Δσc) According to EN 1993-1-9

The EN 1993-1-9 standard classifies structural nodes and welded joints according to detail categories Δσc. This parameter defines the endurance of the material at 2 × 106 cycles:

  • Unwelded parent metal (Δσc = 160 MPa): Solid rolled profiles without holes consistently achieve the highest parameters.
  • Bolted connections (Δσc = 90–112 MPa): Require precise hole fabrication, which we describe in detail in our guide on dimensional tolerances and surface quality of structural sections.
  • Welds and stiffeners (Δσc = 45–80 MPa): Locations where stiffener plates are welded require careful verification due to the drop in detail category.

Furthermore, more information on safe jointing can be found in our post on weldability of S235, S275, and S355 steel grades. At the same time, official design standards and guidelines can be verified on the website of the Polish Committee for Standardization.

How to Increase Steel Fatigue Strength in Crane Runway Beams?

Designers and fabricators of supporting structures should apply three fundamental engineering principles:

  1. Limit welds in bending zones: Above all, weld vertical web stiffeners maintaining a clear gap from the tension flange.
  2. Focus on proven quality: Therefore, choose WOST S.A. structural sections in J2 quality grade (e.g., S355J2), which guarantees high impact toughness at -20°C.
  3. Implement NDT inspection: Consequently, for execution class EXC3, apply visual testing (VT), magnetic particle testing (MT), and ultrasonic testing (UT).

As a result, thanks to rigorous Factory Production Control (FPC) procedures, WOST S.A. structural sections guarantee that steel fatigue strength will meet safety standards throughout the entire operational lifespan of the industrial hall.
